The West Africa Cooperatives Networks (WACoN) has praised the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) for investing GH¢8.4 million in partnership with Ghana Water Limited to rehabilitate water supply systems in Bonsa, Daboase, and Sekyere Heman across the Western and Central Regions.
According to WACoN, “the intervention demonstrates GoldBod's commitment to responsible mining, environmental sustainability and improving the livelihoods of communities affected by mining activities, particularly those facing pressure on water resources.”
The rehabilitation project encompasses infrastructure restoration, including treatment and pumping equipment upgrades, aimed at enhancing water production and reducing service interruptions. The modernization is expected to lower operational costs while strengthening Ghana Water Limited's long-term service delivery capacity.
WACoN advocates extending comparable investments to additional mining-affected communities and emphasizes implementing water body protection measures, including enforcement against illegal mining and river buffer zone restoration. The organization cautions that without safeguarding raw water sources, rising turbidity could escalate treatment expenses and undermine project gains.
WACoN commended GoldBod's leadership, particularly CEO Sammy Gyamfi, characterizing the initiative as exemplary corporate contribution toward infrastructure development and community welfare.
